Fundamental Aspects of the Expansion of the Universe and Cosmic Horizons

چکیده

We use standard general relativity to clarify common misconceptions about fundamental aspects of the expansion of the Universe. In the context of the new standard ΛCDM cosmology we resolve conflicts in the literature regarding cosmic horizons and the Hubble sphere (distance at which recession velocity = c) and we link these concepts to observational tests. We derive the dynamics of a non-comoving galaxy and generalize previous analyses to arbitrary FRW universes. We also derive the counter-intuitive result that objects at constant proper distance have a non-zero redshift. Receding galaxies can be blueshifted and approaching galaxies can be redshifted, even in an empty universe for which one might expect special relativity to apply. Using the empty universe model we demonstrate the relationship between special relativity and Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology. We test the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSL) and its extension to incorporate cosmological event horizons. In spite of the fact that cosmological horizons do not generally have well-defined thermal properties, we find that the GSL is satisfied for a wide range of models. We explore in particular the relative entropic ‘worth’ of black hole versus cosmological horizon area. An intriguing set of models show an apparent entropy decrease but we anticipate this apparent violation of the GSL will disappear when solutions are available for black holes embedded in arbitrary backgrounds. Recent evidence suggests a slow increase in the fine structure constant α = e/h̄c over cosmological time scales. This raises the question of which fundamental quantities are truly constant and which might vary. We show that black hole thermodynamics may provide a means to discriminate between alternative theories invoking varying constants, because some variations in the fundamental ‘constants’ could lead to a violation of the generalized second law of thermodynamics.

Evolution of Information and Complexity in an Ever-Expanding Universe

Using the usual definitions of information and entropy in quantum gravity and statistical mechanics and the existing views about the relation between information and complexity, we examine the evolution of complexity in an ever expanding universe.

Noether Symmetry in f(T) Theory at the anisotropic universe

As it is well known, symmetry plays a crucial role in the theoretical physics. On other hand, the Noether symmetry is a useful procedure to select models motivated at a fundamental level, and to discover the exact solution to the given lagrangian. In this work, Noether symmetry in f(T) theory on a spatially homogeneous and anisotropic Bianchi type I universe is considered. We discuss the Lagran...

Aspects of Cosmic Inflation in Expanding Bose-Einstein Condensates

Phonons in expanding Bose-Einstein condensates with wavelengths much larger than the healing length behave in the same way as quantum fields within a universe undergoing an accelerated expansion. This analogy facilitates the application of many tools and concepts known from general relativity (such as horizons) and the prediction of the corresponding effects such as the freezing of modes after ...

Can the Universe escape eternal acceleration ?

Recent astronomical observations of distant supernovae lightcurves, [1]-[4], suggest that the expansion of the universe has recently begun to accelerate. Acceleration is created by an antigravitational repulsive stress, like that produced by a positive cosmological constant, or universal vacuum energy. It creates a rather bleak eschatological picture. An ever-expanding universe’s future appears...

Entropy and Gravity

The effect of gravity upon changes of the entropy of a gravity-dominated system is discussed. In a universe dominated by vacuum energy, gravity is repulsive, and there is accelerated expansion. Furthermore, inhomogeneities are inflated and the universe approaches a state of thermal equilibrium. The difference between the evolution of the cosmic entropy in a co-moving volume in an inflationary e...
